Kodikkarai beach – Enjoy the quiet and solitude

Kodikkarai beach is located at the southern half of Velankanni. It is 47kms from Queens
Inn and can be reached by tourist vehicles. It takes approx. an hour and a half to reach
and our staff will make the necessary vehicle arrangements upon request. Kodikkarai
beach is surrounded by Palk Straits in the south and by the Bay of Bengal on its east. The
splendid natural beauty allows the visitors a haven for those in search of the sun, sand and
sea.
Flora and fauna
The immense variety of flora and fauna available at Kodikkarai beach is splendid. The
nature of the beach ranges from wet lands to marshy lands and there are lakes as well as
backwater. There is a dry and evergreen tropical forest that stretches for 25 kilometres
Wildlife Sanctuary
It encompasses an area of 333 square kilometres. It is unique because of the presence of
three different types of forests here – evergreen forest, wetlands and the mangrove forests.
One can see mammals like bluebuck, spotted deer, wild boar, semi wild ponies, bonnet
macaque. Sea turtle, starred tortoise, vipers, marsh crocodiles, etc. are some of the
endangered reptiles found here .On the way to the beach you will see wild donkeys and
foxes.
It is open throughout the year from 6.00 a.m. to 6.00p.m.
Bird Watching-for the birding enthusiasts
Birds like flamingos, spoonbills, ibises, olive ediely and herons are found in the wild life
sanctuary. During peak season, around 15,000 flamingos can be seen creating a sinusoidal
wave in unison.
Adventure geek and Nature lovers
If you are a Nature-lover, you will fall in love with the beach. This beach is less crowded and
is mostly occupied by fishermen. Visitors can also avail the opportunity of indulging in a
wide array of watersports options.
Lighthouse….
Kodiakkarai Lighthouse is a 45-metre (148 ft.) tall modern navigational aid for maritime
pilots at sea or on inland waterways.
Access to public: 3. 00p.m -5.00pm.
There is a lookout point built near the old lighthouse. Do go up this lookout and you will see
the coastline all the way to Ramanathapuram. On a clear day, one can see Sri Lanka.
